Introduction
Launched by the Indian Navy on 14 February 2008 at New Delhi, IONS is a voluntary forum uniting the navies of the Indian Ocean Region. It promotes maritime cooperation, mutual understanding and collaboration on issues such as Maritime Security and Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR).
IONS is structured around a Rotating Chairmanship, Biennial Conclaves of Chiefs and Working Groups. Past chairs have included India, the UAE, South Africa, Australia, Bangladesh, Iran, France and Thailand. The 9th IONS Conclave of Chiefs saw India, once again, assuming the Chairmanship, from Thailand, for the period 2026-28.
